Which do you prefer: Classic Literature, or Modern Literature?

I personally prefer Modern Literature because the stories are up to date with the world as it is, now. As for classic literature, I find that they are way too elongated; the authors use double-speak way too much and the detail is excrutiating…

…so, which do you prefer and why?

Modern, for the same reasons you’ve stated: although perhaps a book set in history would be appropriate, the prose used by the classic authors is "flowery," verbose, and therefore unrealistic. modern literature uses subtle nuances, sparse prose, and careful word choice to show a more human experience. Although epic novels deserve epic prose, literature seeks to plumb the essence of humanity, thus deserving realism.

What purpose does synesthesia serve in literature? What does Syllepsis tell us about an author's work?

How does it help illuminate meaning in literature. For both Synesthesia and Syllepsis.
I need to do a Literary Term Presentation on Synesthesia and Syllepsis. I’m stuck on answering the following questions for both terms. What purpose does the lit device serve? What does it tell us about the work? How does it help illuminate meaning?

is that another homework question?

How many books did Shakespeare write and whats their names?

How many books did Shakespeare right? What are the names to the books? I want to at least read half of his books before 8th grade and I am in 7th so yeah I kinda wanna get a head
Sorry I meant plays… How many plas did he write?

He wrote 38 plays available today, and 2 plays that were "lost" (Love’s Labour Won and Cardenio) The ones that are stared are ones I would recomend starting with. When you start out, I would recomend either getting a side-by-side edition (they "translate" the Shakespearean language into modern language next to the original text to help with understanding) or renting/finding copies of recordings of the plays to help with understanding… Shakespeare is hard to read when you first start out, and it may take some time to get used to the language. Seeing it performed is a big help:
Comedies
The Tempest*
The Two Gentlemen of Verona
the Merry Wives of Windsor
Measue for Measure
The Comedy of Errors
Much Ado About Nothing*
Love’s Labour Lost
A Midsummer’s Night Dream*
The Merchant of Venice
As You Like It
The Taming of the Shrew
All’s Well that Ends Well
twelfth Night (or What You Will)*
The Winter’s Tale
Pericles, Prince of Tyre
The Two Noble Kinsmen

Histories
King John
Richard ii
Henry IV (Parts 1 and 2, two seperate plays)
Henry V
Henry VI (parts 1-3)
richard III
Henry VIII

Tragedies
Toilus and Cressida
Coriolnus
Titus Andronicus
Romeo and Juliet*
Timon of Athens
Julius Caesar*
Macbeth*
Hamlet*
King Lear*
Othello*
Antony andCleopatra
Cymbeline

How do medieval themes compare and contrast with themes used in modern literature?

?

Medieval writings tended to be religious or romantic in nature. By romantic I mean tales of courage, love and heroes. Some examples are Marie de France’s stories and the Arthurian romances. The religious writing tended to be about theological topics or written to extol certain moral principles. Those themes do appear in modern literature, but they are only part of what is covered. OUr fiction is more likely to be realistic and concern modern individuals, and these days religious literature is free to explore oposing viewpoints.

What is a well-known, good work of literature that deals with men who abuse their family?

What is a well-known, good work of literature that deals with men who abuse their family?

Like a man that beats his wife and/or kids?
I think when a household is like that, it is very, very sad. But I haven’t read any works of literature that deals with that kind of theme.

The Color Purple, which is an excellent read (and may well be required reading later in your education–but you’ll already have read it!) deals with a woman’s life during and following abuse at the hands of multiple men.

0 Orientalism as a Tool of Colonialism 3/4Edward Said about Orientalism

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Said

“Edward Said is the late world famous Palestinian intellectual and literature critic. He was a prominent member of the Palestinian parliament-in-exile for 14 years until he quietly stepped down in 1991. In 1948, Said and his family were dispossessed from Palestine and settled in Cairo. He came to the United States to attend college and lived in New York for many years. Because of his advocacy for Palestinian self-determination and his membership in the Palestine National Council, Said was not allowed to visit Palestine until several years ago and passed away in 2003.

The late Edward Said was a professor of English and comparative literature, known as both a scholar of modern literature and theory as well as a scholar of Middle East politics. He also authored the groundbreaking book Orientalism, a seminal evaluation of Western misperceptions of the East (Muslim Orient), which set the stage for post-colonial studies. Other works include the Question of Palestine, Culture and Imperialism and the Politics of Dispossession.”:

Pot references in modern popular literature?

I’m wondering if there are any popular books with pot references, because I’m writing a book and I’m worried the publisher would reject it if I put any pot references in my book. in movies it would obviously be fine, but books are a bit different I think. are there any pot references in modern popular literature? and would the publisher be pissed if I tried putting pot references in there? also would he just get me to edit them out or would he just flat out reject it?

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

If it’s got a relevance to the story, I don’t see a problem with it. Of course, I’m not a publisher so I’m only speculating.
