Well, if by "modern" you mean 20th century literature, I’d recommend that your friend read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Not only is it about a poor farming family who treks west, but it is set in the great Depression — which is darn timely these days!!

My favorite books are Of Mice and Men, and A Clockwork Orange.

I’m also interested in graphic novels, but I still need some ideas that could count as school reading material. I can get bored of books pretty easily so I need a book with an engaging plot and characters. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well just put your books on the shelf, and put some heavy thing beside them, even a teddy bear, if they tip off the other side, just put another on that side. Should do the trick without going into stores to get not so cheap junk for a.. bookshelf?!
