I mean fiction.

Well, if by "modern" you mean 20th century literature, I’d recommend that your friend read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Not only is it about a poor farming family who treks west, but it is set in the great Depression — which is darn timely these days!!

I’m an 8th grade girl, so nothing that’s 1000 pages long or has a bunch of SAT words in it.

My favorite books are Of Mice and Men, and A Clockwork Orange.

I’m also interested in graphic novels, but I still need some ideas that could count as school reading material. I can get bored of books pretty easily so I need a book with an engaging plot and characters. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sounds like you enjoy more advanced books than a girl you age.
I think you might enjoy.
Thought Gang: Tibor Fisher
A Confederacy of Dunces: John Kennedy Toole
The Demon: Hubert Shelby Jr.
Rum Diary: Hunter Thompson
On The Road: Jack Kerouac

I think you would enjoy any of those books. Great characters, fast paced and good plots.
I hope you check these out I really think you would enjoy them.

Do you quote the actual author who wrote the short story or the author from the literature book?

You would just quote the author of the story. For example, I have a literature book for my English class that has a bunch of different poems, plays and short stories in it all of them obviously by different authors, where as the lit book has the name of two authors on the front. In actuality, those two authors on the front of my lit book are the editors for the lit book. If you were writing a works cited page you would want to include the name of the editor for the lit book as well as the author of the story you are citing.

Is there something I can buy that will hold them in place, because I saw something like that in the library. Please give me a detailed answer. THANKS!

Detailed?
Well just put your books on the shelf, and put some heavy thing beside them, even a teddy bear, if they tip off the other side, just put another on that side. Should do the trick without going into stores to get not so cheap junk for a.. bookshelf?!

Hope I Helped.
