Harkening back to the writing styles and small town settings of earlier American authors – John Steinbeck, Harper Lee, and Carson McCullers – "Only the Truth" is a psychological mystery with as many twists as the country road leading to the humble home of Billy Ray Hutchins, a lonely uneducated man living in the hills of Arkansas. Life changes little for him from day to day until he brings home a young drifter he meets at the railroad tracks, the mysterious Charlene, whose last name he never asks. He becomes her Sweet Billy Ray and his love for Charlene is steady and uncomplicated until the sheriff shows up to take her away in handcuffs. With the only woman he has ever loved behind bars for the coldblooded murder of the old man across the road, a confused and devastated Billy Ray sets out on a quest to find the truth, only the truth, whether it leads him to be able to save his Charlene from a death sentence or it frees him from her spell.

PRAISE for ONLY THE TRUTH!

Brown does a masterful job engaging the reader while weaving the psychological tapestry of love, loss, brutality and shame that challenges us to think. – Blink on Crime

Intriguing, disturbing, beautiful – Chelsea Hoffman, Examiner.com

This well-written novella has it all: interest, suspense, great characters, and a surprising conclusion. – Fifty is the New Forty

Billy Ray Hutchins, Police Chief Williams, Mrs. Covey – positive African-American characters– in a heartwarming book that has nothing to do with race. – books of Worth

Only the Truth is such a special treat and ‘Sweet Billy Ray’ is so endearing, an innocent heart, venturing down life’s rocky road. I already miss him and it’s like missing a good ole’ friend. – Kathleen McLaughlin, Business End of the Pen

Criminal Profiler Pat Brown takes the reader on a psychological ride as the main character Billy Ray Hutchins wrestles with the fact that he lived with and loved a murderer. Billy Ray is best described as a country bumpkin, his world is turned upside down, and he is forced to go into the mind of a killer. Only the Truth is a real page turner that is sure to keep readers interested from start to finish! – Levi Page, The Levi Page Show

I have a research paper due! It is mostly done, but I just don’t know what he did for modern literature.

Spenser was largely responsible for popularising the work of Italian narrative poets like Ariosto in English, through his use of similar ideas and subject matter in his Faerie Queene. Shakespeare borrowed many of this themes and ideas from Spenser, to write fantasy plays like A Midsummer Nights Dream or Two Gentlemen of Verona. Shakespeare used Spenser’s strong and preposterous plotlines to make drama, not poetry – but without Spenser reviving the tradition of narrative poetry in English, Shakespeare might have had only the lyric poetry of Wyatt and Surrey to look back on, which would have limited Shakespeare’s sense of what was possible in poetry enormously.

And Spenser’s poetry is also dramatic in other ways. In Sonnet 81 (One day I wrote her name upon the strand), Spenser has the girl who the sonnet is addressed to speak herself in the sonnet. In Petrarch’s sonnets (the model for most European sonnets before Spenser) the girl never speaks. She is distant, and unobtainable, and silent; the sonnet is almost the boy just talking to himself.

In Spenser’s sonnet 81, the girl speaks for a full quatrain. This would have been an explosive innovation at the time – a girl who can talk!

Shakespeare takes the idea much further. When Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulet ball, each lover speaks the same number of lines. And Juliet keeps talking all through the play. Juliet is one of the first fully formed female characters in modern drama – she might never have happened without Spenser’s sonnet 81.

It depends on what you mean by similar…I suppose you mean it in theme. Well if yes, then I would say Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher-Stowe, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. The first two deal with slavery and the latter with black people trying to survive.

Hi,

I am trying to read some books that are important and good during the summer.

Please give me the titles and authors of book that will help me a lot (in English and other subjects) throughout high school. (not just for entertainment)

But not so hard book. (book level 5.0-7.0)

Thank you.

freshman year we read a lot of short stories but…

Romeo and Juliet – - shakespeare
Iliad – - Homer

For Summer reading we had…
whirligig – - Paul Fleischman
Night – - Elie Wiesel
Swallowing Stones – - Joyce McDonald
Witness – - Karen Hess

The Odyssey is good to look at. Shakespeare is bound to come up a fair amount (I recommend "No Fear Shakespeare" it helps a lot. I’ve actually used it when I was in a play)

Zoe Broussard loves the life she and her husband Pierce have built in her beloved Louisiana hometown—especially their popular brasserie Zoe B’s, to which folks drive all the way from Lafayette for lunch or dinner. It seems like heaven.
But it’s about to become hell. A series of anonymous notes is making her life a misery—because Zoe has a secret so terrible it could leave the business in shambles and tear her marriage apart. Can she find the courage to face her past?
The first in a new series from Kathy Herman, False Pretenses is a gripping suspense novel that leaves a lasting impression about honesty and accountability.

Why do the ideas of the hero and the journey, prevalent in ancient literatures, continue to be a theme of modern literature?

I have to write an essay on this and would appreciate if you could help me.

This is the end of our ancient greece unit, and I was thinking of comparing and contrasting ‘The Odyssey’, and either ‘Ender’s Shadow’ or ‘Ender’s Game’, in this essay.

The Odyssey is the best example of the epic hero journey.

Plot Type: The Quest
The Call
None in the book, references to the Trojan War
This Booker Plot goes in chronological order, not in the order Homer tells the story. That’s just the way it works; also, Booker practically built "The Quest" plot around the Odyssey, since Homer established some of the traditions of stories like this one. "The Call" is Odysseus’s yearning to go home from Troy once the city has been destroyed and the war is over. Along with the other Ithakans, our hero begins his journey home.

From Shmoop Lit/Hero Journey in the Odyssey

I run a real estate development and we are going to be opening our Activity Center facility in the 6 weeks. My main project at this point is stocking our lending library. I have already purchased fiction and mystery books from our local library book sale. I am especially interested in tracking down high quality children’s and non-fiction books, as well as reference books.

You could try to make deals with a local used bookstore or call around to thrift shops or Goodwill stores to see if they have any book lots.
